Your smartphone can do much more than make calls and send messages. A few simple settings can make reading, hearing, typing, and finding information easier. You do not need to download several new apps or learn complicated features. In many cases, the tools you need are already built into your phone.
The names and locations of settings may vary between iPhone and Android devices. If you cannot find a feature, use the search bar in the Settings app and type a word such as “text size,” “volume,” or “screen.”
Make Text Easier to Read
Small text can be difficult to read, especially when you are checking a message, viewing a website, or reading directions. Increasing the text size is one of the quickest improvements you can make.
Increase the text size
On an iPhone, open Settings, choose Display & Brightness, and tap Text Size. Move the slider to the right until the text feels comfortable. You can also turn on Larger Text under Accessibility for additional size options.
On many Android phones, open Settings, select Display, and look for Font size or Font size and style. Move the slider to increase the size.
Avoid making the text larger than necessary. If it becomes too large, some buttons or parts of a webpage may be harder to see.
Turn on bold text
Bold text can make words stand out more clearly. On an iPhone, this option is usually under Display & Brightness. On Android, look under Display or Accessibility, depending on the phone model.
After changing this setting, check a few apps to make sure the text looks comfortable and does not feel crowded.
Use display zoom
Display zoom enlarges more than just the letters. It can make buttons, icons, and other items on the screen easier to see.
On an iPhone, look under Display & Brightness for Display Zoom. Android phones may offer a similar option called Screen zoom or Display size in the Display settings.
Improve Screen Visibility
Good contrast and a simple home screen can make it easier to find what you need.
Turn on dark mode or light mode
Dark mode uses a darker background, while light mode uses a brighter background. Some people find dark mode more comfortable in the evening, while others prefer light mode because it feels clearer during the day.
You can usually find this option under Display & Brightness on an iPhone or Display on Android. Many phones also let you schedule dark mode to turn on automatically at a certain time.
Try both modes for a day or two and keep the one that feels easier to read.
Reduce home screen clutter
A crowded home screen can make it difficult to find important apps. Keep the apps you use most often on the first screen, such as:
– Phone
– Messages
– Camera
– Contacts
– Maps
– Weather
– Calendar
Move less-used apps into folders or onto another screen. On many phones, you can press and hold an app icon to move it. Remove apps from the home screen without deleting them if you still want to keep them available in the app library or app list.
Make the Phone Easier to Hear
Your phone offers several ways to make calls, alerts, and other sounds easier to notice.
Adjust the volume for different sounds
Phones usually have separate volume controls for calls, alerts, media, and alarms. Press the volume buttons, then open the full volume panel if available. Make sure the ringtone and notification volume are high enough for you to hear.
You may also want to choose a ringtone that is clear and distinctive. A simple tone may be easier to recognize than a song or soft melody.
Turn on vibration and visual alerts
Vibration can help you notice calls and messages when the phone is in a pocket or on a table. Look in Sounds & Haptics on an iPhone or Sound and vibration on Android.
Some phones also offer a flashing screen or camera light for alerts. These visual signals can be useful when the phone is across the room or when the sound is turned down.
Use speakerphone or headphones
For longer calls, speakerphone may be more comfortable than holding the phone to your ear. When using speakerphone, place the phone on a stable surface and stay in a reasonably quiet area.
If you use hearing devices, check whether your phone supports a compatible connection. The phone’s accessibility settings may include options for connected audio devices.
Make Typing and Calling Simpler
A few changes can reduce mistakes and save time.
Turn on larger keyboard keys when available
Some Android phones allow you to change the keyboard height or layout. You may also be able to increase the display size, which makes keyboard buttons larger.
On any phone, turn the device sideways while typing if the app supports landscape mode. The wider keyboard can make it easier to select the correct letter.
Add frequently used contacts
Save important contacts with clear names, such as “John Smith Home” or “Family Doctor Office.” Adding a photo can also help you identify a contact quickly.
You can place favorite contacts on the phone’s Favorites list. Some phones allow you to add a contact shortcut to the home screen, making it possible to call someone with one tap.
Use voice typing
Voice typing can be helpful when you want to write a longer message without using the keyboard. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and speak clearly. Review the message before sending it, since the phone may misunderstand a word or name.
Voice typing works best in a quiet room and with short, complete sentences.
Stay Organized With Built-In Tools
Your phone can help you remember appointments, tasks, and everyday details.
Use calendar alerts
Add appointments to the Calendar app and set a reminder. You can choose an alert several minutes, hours, or days before an event.
Include useful details in the appointment, such as the address, parking information, or items you need to bring. A calendar entry is easier to use when all the important information is in one place.
Create reminders and shopping lists
Use the Reminders app on an iPhone or a similar app on Android to create lists. You might make separate lists for groceries, household tasks, birthdays, or errands.
Keep list names simple and add one item per line. Checking items off as you complete them can help you stay organized without carrying a separate notebook.
Add emergency and contact information
Many phones let you add an emergency contact or basic owner information to the lock screen. This can help someone return a lost phone or contact a family member if needed.
Look for Emergency, Medical ID, or Safety and emergency in the Settings app. Only add information you are comfortable storing on the device.
Protect Your Eyes and Your Attention
A few settings can make phone use more comfortable and less distracting.
Turn on Night Shift, Night Light, or a similar feature to reduce the amount of blue-toned light in the evening. You can also set the screen to turn off after a shorter or longer period under Auto-Lock or Screen timeout.
Finally, review app notifications. Turn off alerts from apps that are not important. Fewer interruptions make it easier to notice calls, messages, and calendar reminders that matter most.
Start with one or two changes, use the phone for a day, and then adjust the settings again if needed. The best setup is the one that feels natural, clear, and comfortable for you.
